MANGROVES: STILL FOUND IN MUMBAI?

RAIN RAIN RAIN!

On 29th August 2017 and 20th September 2017 Mumbai witnessed heavy rains. The Whole city witnessed High tides and heavy rains which resulted in water logging in Mumbai. Offices, Schools, and Colleges were shut. But on the same day, there was only closed. Area which was not affected by rains and was not flooded with water. Carter Road in Bandra is the only area which was not affected by rain. But what is the reason behind this? Is this due to any magic?

Well, the reason is nature. The reason is mangroves. We all know that mangroves protect us from waterlogging problem. Every monsoon Mumbai pays a heavy price for losing its mangroves that once protected us from floods. According to the reports, 37 sq.km of mangroves existed in Mumbai in early 90’s. Mumbai lost around 40% of all its mangroves in the last decades. Bandra carter road is the only place in the western suburb where the mangroves are found. But is it due to nature or is there anyone behind this? Mr. Rehan Merchant who has been taking care and protecting mangroves from last 5 years. And he is doing this ALL ALONE. But the question is why is he doing this?

“I’ve seen today’s generation does not care about nature. And due to deforestation nature is getting reduced day by day. And if there won’t be anyone to take care of nature, our next generation will be suffered.”

Also, he got many threats and warnings from forest department and police but he didn’t give up.
“I got many warnings from forest department. They came to me and gave warning that if I won’t stop this I’ll be put in the jail. They gave me 4 hours’ time but after 4 hours they never came back.”

Finally, his hard work gave him a result. Local Municipality decided to support him with 10 workers on every Saturday.

IT TAKES JUST ONE PERSON TO TRIGGER A CHANGE AND REHAN MERCHANT IS THAT ONE.
